Vallisneria Spiralis (Straight Vals) is unique among vals for its straight vertical leaves, acting as the perfect background plant growing tall and fast to create a jungle-like appearance. These grass-like plants spread along side shoots as nutrient-loving plants that anchor deep into the substrate.

Overview

Background planting is where this species earns its place, sending up straight vertical ribbon leaves that grow tall and fast to fill the upper water column. It spreads by runners along the substrate, anchoring firmly once established. As a heavy root feeder it benefits from nutrient-rich substrate more than liquid fertilizers.

Care

Leopard Val is an undemanding background plant that spreads by runners to form a dense curtain of ribbon-like leaves marked with dark horizontal spotting. It tolerates a wide range of lighting and water hardness, doing best in moderately hard water with stable parameters, and does not require CO2 injection though growth is faster with it. The spotting pattern intensifies under brighter light, so placement near the light source brings out the coloration more than growing it in shade.

Planting & trimming

Plant only the white root crown at or just above the substrate surface, leaving the leaf base exposed, since burying the crown causes rot or the plant forcing itself back up. Group several plants in clusters of five to ten at the back of the tank to form a fuller curtain effect. Runners will travel outward quickly once established, so unwanted plantlets should be pulled by hand rather than cut, and thinning every few weeks keeps the stand manageable.

Fertilizing

This plant feeds primarily through its roots, so nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs placed near the crown support denser growth and better runner production. In inert gravel it will survive but spreads slowly, and pale or thin new leaves usually indicate a lack of root-available nutrients such as iron. Liquid fertilizers offer some benefit but are secondary to substrate feeding for this heavy root feeder.

Propagation

Leopard Val propagates readily via runners sent out from the base of established rosettes, each forming a new plantlet that can be left in place to thicken the stand or separated and replanted elsewhere. Flowering and seed production are rare in aquarium conditions, so vegetative propagation through runners is the practical method for hobbyists.

Problems

Leaf tips that are cut or trimmed will brown back from the cut rather than heal, so overly long leaves should be removed whole at the base instead of trimmed at the tip. The plant is notably sensitive to liquid carbon or glutaraldehyde-based algaecides, which can cause rapid melt and should be avoided in tanks housing it. A newly planted crown that is buried too deep will often rot or push itself back up over several days until it sits at the correct depth.
