The Royal Gramma Basslet (Gramma loreto) brings a burst of color with a bright purple to violet anterior contrasted by a vibrant yellow posterior; coveted for its unique color pattern and relatively small adult size, it is a great beginner fish well suited for small nano reef systems. Native to the deep-water reefs of the Caribbean, it prefers extensive rockwork caves to hide and somewhat subdued lighting; territorial toward its own kind, it should be housed singly, but is peaceful toward tankmates of similar size and temperament; keep in reef systems of at least 30 gallons and feed a varied carnivorous diet of brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and quality frozen preparations.
