Potamogeton Gayi (Pondweed) is a narrow-leafed and delicate plant from the ponds and rivers of southern South America, growing submerged at a fast rate. A stoloniferous plant with thin, soft stems ranging from green to orange-brown, it tolerates a wide range of water hardness and suits the midground or background of medium to large tanks.

Care guide
Overview
Forms dense, feathery stands in the midground or background as its thin stems multiply via creeping runners. Colour shifts from green to orange-brown with stronger light and iron dosing, and unlike most tropical stems it handles cool, unheated water well. Fast growth means regular trimming and replanting to keep the stand tidy.
Care
Gay's pondweed is a fast-growing background or midground stem plant that forms dense stands once established. It tolerates a wide range of water hardness and does not need CO2 injection, though supplementation speeds growth and helps colour intensify toward orange-brown under stronger light. Coming from a cool subtropical climate, it is unusual among aquarium stems in that it does well in unheated tanks, and can even tolerate temperatures well below typical tropical ranges.
Planting & trimming
Plant small bunches of three or so stems a few centimetres apart directly into the substrate, since it grows from creeping rhizomes rather than attaching to hardscape. It spreads by underground runners and will wander over time, so keep it separated from slow-growing carpet plants and remove stray shoots as needed. Trim tall stems periodically and replant the cut tops to keep the stand dense and encourage bushier growth.
Fertilizing
This plant is not fussy about fertilization and will grow adequately in a moderately nutrient-rich substrate with occasional liquid fertilizer dosing. Root tabs or a nutrient-rich substrate support the creeping rhizome system, while supplemental iron helps maintain leaf colour under higher light. Pale or thin new growth usually signals a need for more consistent fertilization rather than a specific deficiency.
Propagation
Propagate by cutting the tops of tall stems and replanting them, or by dividing and relocating the spreading underground runners once they have produced new shoots. Both methods are straightforward and make this one of the easier stem plants to multiply in a home aquarium.
Problems
Stems can become brittle and snap easily when handled, especially in nutrient-poor conditions, so careful planting and trimming reduces breakage. Weak lighting or low nutrients tend to cause thin, pale, and leggy growth, while algae can foul the fine leaves if flow and light are not balanced. The plant does not tolerate being grown out of water and will decline if allowed to emerse.
