Pogostemon Helferi Downoi Red (Downoi Red, Little Star) is an eye-catching aquatic plant native to Thailand's rivers, thriving in hard water aquariums. Its elongated leaves have frilled edges that add texture, with pink to red veins contrasting bright green leaves; CO2, high light, and nutrient-rich substrate enhance the red coloration.

Care guide

Overview

Wavy, star-shaped leaves carry pink to red veining against a bright green base, intensifying under strong light and CO2. This compact rosette stays low and tight when well supplied, stretching leggy without adequate light. It is a heavy root feeder needing nutrient-rich substrate and demands moderate care from the keeper.

Care

A compact rosette plant prized for its wavy, star-shaped leaves that develop pink to red veining under strong light and CO2 supplementation. Moderate to high light and CO2 injection keep the rosettes tight and low; without them the leaves stretch upward and lose their characteristic curled form. It is a fairly heavy root feeder despite its small size, so a nutrient-rich substrate is important for healthy, colorful growth.

Planting & trimming

Plant individual rosettes a few centimeters apart directly into the substrate, positioning the crown right at the surface without burying the growing point, since a buried crown tends to rot. It can also be wedged into crevices of porous rock or driftwood, tied with fishing line or fixed with cyanoacrylate glue, taking advantage of its mild lithophyte tendency. Space plantings so the lateral side shoots have room to fill in and form a dense cluster over time.

Fertilizing

Root tabs pushed into the substrate near the base provide the steady supply of nutrients this plant needs, since it draws heavily from its roots even though it also absorbs some nutrients from the water column. Liquid fertilizers supplying iron and potassium help maintain leaf color and the tight, ruffled texture; pale new growth or loss of the red veining and curl usually signals a lack of these micronutrients. Regular dosing alongside CO2 injection produces the fastest, most compact growth.

Propagation

New rosettes form from short lateral side shoots that grow out from the base of the parent plant and develop their own small root systems. Once a shoot has established enough roots, it can be separated with a clean cut and replanted elsewhere in the tank. Propagation is generally slow to moderate compared with faster-growing stem plants.

Problems

Newly acquired specimens are often grown emersed at the nursery and may shed some leaves as they convert to a submersed form over a couple of weeks, which is normal and not a sign of poor health. Pale or yellowing new leaves typically point to iron or magnesium deficiency, while stretched, elongated growth indicates insufficient light or CO2. Trimming should be limited to removing dead outer leaves rather than cutting into the main rosette, since uneven cutting spoils the star-shaped silhouette for a long time.
