The Tobacco Basslet, common in the tropical Western Atlantic, has a light gray lower body and a black and silver mottled dorsal pattern split by an orange band. It is a very hardy aquarium species best kept in fish-only or cautious reef aquariums; larger specimens threaten small crustaceans and small fish like damselfish, gobies, and blennies, so keep a single individual in at least a 265-liter tank and introduce groups simultaneously; like all Serranus it is hermaphroditic; feed chopped fish, squid, mysis, and enriched brine shrimp.
