The Regal Angelfish has vivid vertical striations of blue, white, yellow, or orange on the body and pelvic fin; Maldives and Red Sea specimens have a distinctive yellow breast while Indo-Pacific relatives have a blue/gray breast, and juveniles show a False Eye Spot on the dorsal fin that fades with maturity. It is more difficult to maintain than other angels and should be introduced first to stake out territory; provide at least a 125 gallon tank with hiding places and live rock for grazing; it may nip at large-polyped stony corals and clam mantles but is usually fine with small-polyped stony corals; entice with fresh shrimp and chopped seafood, and feed Spirulina, marine algae, and sponge-containing angelfish preparations.
