Hemigraphis Colorata (Purple Waffle) is a unique terrarium plant with green tops and bright purple undersides, its ruffled, wrinkly leaves providing excellent contrast. Though often sold as aquatic, it is not fully aquatic and will melt if kept submerged long-term; it thrives emersed in high-humidity terrariums or paludariums with moderate to high light.

Care guide
Overview
Wrinkled, waffle-textured leaves show dark green on top and deep purple beneath, creeping into a low mat as humidity stays high. Despite frequent sale as an aquatic species, it only holds up emersed in a terrarium or paludarium with moist substrate and moderate to bright light. Easy to grow but prone to melt if kept submerged.
Care
This creeping perennial produces wrinkled, puckered leaves that are dark green on top and deep purple underneath, forming a low mat where humidity stays high. It is frequently sold in aquarium stores as an aquatic plant but is not a true aquatic species and cannot sustain submerged growth for more than a few weeks to months before rotting. Best results come from growing it emersed in a terrarium, paludarium, or riparium with the roots in moist substrate and the foliage exposed to humid air. Moderate to bright indirect light keeps the purple coloration intense; low light causes fading and leggy growth.
Planting & trimming
Plant rooted cuttings or crowns into moist, humus-rich substrate with the crown sitting above the soil line to avoid stem rot, spacing plants roughly 4-6 inches apart to allow the creeping stems to spread. It performs best in the emersed sections of a paludarium or in a covered terrarium where humidity stays elevated. Trim back leggy stems periodically to encourage bushier, more compact growth and to propagate new cuttings.
Fertilizing
In terrarium or paludarium setups, a nutrient-rich, well-draining soil substrate supplies most of what the plant needs, and occasional diluted liquid fertilizer can support faster growth. Root tabs are unnecessary given the shallow, fibrous root system, but a light dose of general houseplant fertilizer during the growing season helps maintain leaf color. Pale or washed-out purple undersides usually indicate insufficient light rather than a nutrient deficiency.
Propagation
Propagation is done by taking stem cuttings with two to three nodes, stripping the lower leaves, and rooting them in moist soil or shallow water before transferring to substrate. Lateral runners can also be cut and replanted directly. Roots typically form within two to four weeks under humid conditions.
Problems
Prolonged submersion leads to progressive melt, with stems rotting and leaves dropping as the plant cannot photosynthesize efficiently underwater. In overly wet or poorly drained terrarium substrate, root rot can set in, while dry conditions bring on leaf crisping and browning at the edges. Mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites occasionally target the foliage in enclosed terrarium environments.
