Begonia Arabian Sunset is a 1992 hybrid Mallet cane-like begonia with teardrop, ruffled leaves hinting maroon and red, bright pink flowers contrasting dark foliage, and bamboo-like swollen nodes on its stems. An easy terrestrial plant for terrariums, paludariums, or as a houseplant, it prefers bright-indirect light with soil allowed to dry between waterings; it must never be submerged.

Care guide

Overview

Teardrop leaves with a ruffled edge show maroon and red tones against dark green, offset by bright pink flowers along bamboo-like, swollen-noded stems. This cane-type begonia works as a background terrarium or paludarium accent or as a houseplant, growing slowly under bright indirect light with humidity above 70%. Soil must dry between waterings, and it should never be submerged or misted directly.

Care

This cane-type begonia forms upright, bamboo-like stems with swollen nodes and does well as a terrarium accent or houseplant given bright, indirect light and steady warmth above 65F. It tolerates a wide humidity range but colors up best and grows most densely above 70% relative humidity, as found in a closed terrarium or paludarium riparium zone. Keep it out of direct sun and avoid wetting the foliage, since damp leaves invite fungal problems.

Planting & trimming

Pot in a loose, airy, well-draining mix such as a blend of orchid bark, perlite, and standard potting soil, keeping the crown above the substrate line to prevent stem rot. In terrariums or paludariums, place it in a background area above the waterline with good airflow around the foliage, never allowing the roots or stems to sit in standing water. Trim leggy stems back to encourage bushier growth and to harvest cuttings for propagation.

Fertilizing

A balanced diluted liquid fertilizer applied every few weeks during active growth supports foliage color and stem development, since this begonia is grown in soil rather than aquatic substrate. Reduce or stop feeding in low light or cooler months when growth slows. Pale new leaves or weak stem growth usually indicate the plant needs a nutrient boost rather than more water.

Propagation

Propagates readily from stem cuttings taken with two to four nodes, rooted in water or directly in moist substrate. Leaf cuttings can also be used, though stem cuttings root faster and more reliably for this cane type. New plants typically show root development within a few weeks under warm, humid conditions.

Problems

Overwatering is the most common cause of decline, leading to soft, rotting stems and root loss, so the growing medium should be allowed to dry slightly between waterings. Crisping or browning leaf edges typically point to humidity that is too low or exposure to direct light, while limp leaves and stem collapse can indicate rot from excess moisture around the base. Sucking insects such as mealybugs and aphids occasionally show up on new growth and should be treated promptly to prevent spread.
